Director of the National Addiction Centre (King’s College London), the leading UK and most productive European Addictions research group. Academic Lead of Addictions Clinical Academic Group (CAG) within Kings Health Partners Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC). Qualified as a medical doctor and specialised in psychiatry and in addictions. Substantial involvement with UK and international policy and practice (e.g. UN; WHO).
Major research academic with over 600 addictions publications including extensive original research; special interest in policy formation and the relationship of research to the improvement of treatment as well as formal policy formation. 40 years’ experience in diverse areas of the Addictions Treatment field; extensive experience as lead clinician for innovative responses in community and residential settings.
Awarded EUFAS Lifetime Achievement Award (European Federation of Addiction Societies) in 2019 and Chimera Lifetime Award from EuroPAD in 2022.
Received Knighthood from the Queen in 2016 for ‘services to medicine, addictions and public health’.
