Prof. Peter Stärkel is professor of hepatology and gastroenterology at the Université Catholique de Louvain. He is the head of the alcohol withdrawal unit at Cliniques Universitaires Saint Luc in Brussels, which is a clinical and translational research unit where patients follow a highly standardized program including high quality clinical care and standardized research protocols. He is also the co-director of the alcohol research unit in the laboratory of hepato-gastroenterolgy. His principal research interest lies on understanding organ damage related to alcohol abuse in humans with specific attention to alcohol-associated liver disease. His research focuses on the gut-liver-brain axis in alcohol use disorder patients and its relationship to distant organ damage. He has developed many international collaborations in the field of human alcohol research and published more than 150 papers in high impact journals.
